In the 1980s, a Kansas City activist, Beth Smith, asked Rita Blitt to create something that would make the world a better place. The result of this overwhelming request was the phrase "Kindness is Contagious. Catch it!" In 1990, Blitt's words led to the creation of a program designed to encourage acts of gentleness, thoughtfulness, compassion, and humanity all over the world. Now under the auspices of Synergy Services in Kansas City, the Kindness Program has prompted thousands of students to write essays nominating individuals and groups for the annual Kindest Kansas Citian Award and Rita Blitt Kindest School Award.
