Award-winning composer Lansing McLoskey was going to participate in the 2011 Aspen composers’ conference and he was interested in having a visual artist respond to his music, painting onstage during the performance. As Rita Blitt paints freely, which often creates quite a mess, she declined the invitation, but was interested in listening to McLoskey's music and as a result, created 20 paintings that she shared with him and proposed to create an animated film of those paintings with film animator, Tom Alpern, set to McLoskey's composition, Blur. Three days later, Lansing arrived from Florida with his wife at Blitt's California studio. Together, they rearranged the order of the paintings to blend with the music. That summer, Blitt, working with Alpern, finished blur, which is a remarkable melding of animated visual images with music. The film was premiered in Aspen in August.
